This is the largest arctic crater in the world (and is half a century old)

In the Desert of Yucca FlatNevada, there is a huge artificial crater, the largest in the world, which turned 55 on July 6.

The crater was the product of the huge explosion of a 104-kilometer atomic bomb that was detonated underground on July 6, 1962. But the purpose of the explosion was not military purposes. Thus was born the sedan crater.

The explosion raised a ground dome of 88,392 cubic meters above the ground, removing and expelling more than 11,000 tons of land. The resulting crater reached 100 meters deep with a diameter of approximately 390 meters.

The objective was an experiment of Operation Plowshare, a program to investigate the use of nuclear weapons for mining and the construction of large infrastructure with lower costs.

The crater was used as training place for Apollo program astronauts, and receives a good number of tourists a year, as it is listed in the National Register of Historic Places in the United States.
